iTunes question, sort of

OK, this is not exactly an application question, but I'm not on the X4U 
list any more, and I thought someone here might know.

I was just listening to some tunes on my son's iBook, plugged into my 
speakers. When I was done, I unplugged the speakers, and the iBook 
froze. (It restarted OK.) I know the earphone socket is a dual socket, 
so what's the proper procedure to use when unplugging earphones or 
speakers to avoid such problems?
