[X Newbies] Conceptualizing Desktop

I rarely see my desktop because I always have too many applications with
a lot of windows open. I usually try to keep the left side of my screen
cleared so I can remember the names of my hard drives and see which CD is
currently inserted. Anything else on the desktop is definitely out of
sight and out of mind.
