Randy,

If I can add something.

The new machines (I've seen it now on PowerBooks and G5 iMac so I
guess its on iBooks and G5 Dekstops too) have a utility built into
the setup assistant.

Basically you start the new machine up, it asks you what language you
want to use and then it asks if you have an existing Mac to transfer
files off. If you say yes, it talks you through FireWire Target mode
with a series of dialogue boxes (no cable provided though) and then
comes up with a screen with checkboxes.

The boxes include: Accounts, Applications and Files.

You select what you want (most people would click all of them) and
then it copies them over to the new machine.

I've done this a few times now and applications copy over fine
(including Classic ones) and all I've need to do was set up printers
again.

The whole thing saves a heap of time and makes sure you don't forget
to copy over a preference file or whatever.

I only wish you could get a free standing copy of it to use for
backup or whatever.

Most of the people I know use Macs, and it feels like we're a
privileged minority, though the odd thing is that, unlike Mercedes'
or BMWs, they are not significantly more expensive than the
competition. Why does anybody use anything else? -Douglas Adams
