Typically and until fairly recently, the DVD burners *from Apple* were DVD-R but not DVD+R compatible. So the person was probably quite accustomed to giving that advice since it was right, generally speaking. Even in those instances (IOW recently) where DVD+R is usable, DVD-R is also.
