[X-Newbies] Broadband and Macintosh

I am bewildered and wonder if anybody has any ideas.

When broadband finally reached our small rural village, we were
delighted and immediately bought a connection kit from our Wanadoo.

I've done all the installation, spoken to FranceTelecom to verify that
the line is ready and spent a great deal of time on the Wanadoo
telephone help-line (at my expense of course) trying to find out why
when I try to use the internet all I get is the message:

> Safari can't find the Server
> Safari can’t open the page “http://www.wanadoo.fr/” because it can’t
> find the server “www.wanadoo.fr”.

They had me jumping through all sorts of hoops changing various
settings, but in the end decided that they could do nothing and
suggested that I contact the firm that sold me the computer!! They
seemed to be suggesting that it is something to do with Safari (even
though the modem installation was specifically for OS 10.3 and Safari)!
Though things were no different when I switched to Internet Explorer

They are saying (I think) that because Mail is working* the connection
is good and it is nothing to do with them. Can this be true? No
internet for nearly two weeks is beginning to get to me.

By the way, the power light and the broadband light on the modem are
both shining.

Any thoughts will be (very) gratefully received.

*I wrote this yesterday evening. Soon afterwards mail stopped working.
It is finally back - 16 hours later!
(Great gnashing of teeth!)
