Sorry, I helped in pointed to Pacifist in a round-about way.  But I 
have never had to use it.
As for the Repair Permissions business, this is something that you 
should routinely do, every month or so, and before and after installing 
software.  Launch Disk Utility, select your hard drive or volume in the 
left column, click on the Repair Permissions button in the lower left 
corner.  This might take five or ten minutes to run.  This process 
ensures that the OS knows that certain files are sitting where they are 
supposed to be.
