So I looked at the machine again today and it will let me drag the Network
icon to the dock below "the line" and it behaves the way the alias I have in
Panther does. So there's some reason Apple won't allow the alias on the
desktop but there's way to keep the functionality.

Off topic...one thing I noticed about Tiger is that it does seem to boot up
way faster than Panther.
