500 MHZ combo drive will not stay shut?

My 500 mhz iBook running 10.2.6 and the latest version of toast always wants
to have a CD in the drive. With no CD's mounted and the CD drawer empty -
the computer cycles the CD tray open. If I close it - It cycles it back
open?? If I put a blank or data CD in the drawer it stays closed. I've tried
everything to include a resart w/o success. Any ideas??
