how to get a date

OK,
Now that I have your attention!  As I was following the info regarding 
the date and time in the menu bar it became clear to me that I do not  
have the date posted in my menu bar and I catch myself  looking there 
for it.  I went to Preferences but while there is a little calendar 
shown, I don't seem to have a way to put the date with the time on the 
menu bar!  Hmm, have I missed something?  Please enlighten!
