[iTunes] my itunes trouble - Books not showing up

I'm having the same problem with books not showing up when I have my iPod
docked to my computer, an older desktop Mac running 10.4.11, with the newest
iTunes update for that OS. There is a books tab, but when I click it, I just
get the spinning beachball forever and ever.

The books that are already loaded in the iPod are not removed when I synch,
but I cannot add/change what is there, unless I change the genre of the
material to "music," instead of "audiobook."

Most of my audiobooks were ripped from CDs, not purchased downloads, but
those don't seem to work, either.

My hard drive is NOT overly full (about 60%).
My iTunes library is around 100 GB +/-. Not terribly huge.

All of the books show up fine in iTunes, and all of the playlists I have
made of them are still there; it's getting them into/out of the iPods that
seems to be the problem. I have tried with several different iPods of
different generations since doing this iTunes update...and none of them work
right with the books. I consider the update a personal disaster!
