Harry,
Thanks for your reply re my problem.
I tried rebuilding the desktop and it WORKED !!.

So, many thanks for putting me out of my "misery". The pics are in 
the computer and the stick has been reformatted for use again.

I think I will go ahead and buy a card reader anyway, as it's a 
useful addition to have.
