Microphone still responding after it's turned off

More than once I've had iListen put gibberish in my documents because the
microphone was still responding even though the Feedback Window showed it as
off.

It is neither application or microphone specific. I have had it happen in
multiple applications and when using different microphone/USB adapter
combinations.
