appleworks/word screw-up

x-apps folks,

help!

i opened a file sent from my job. it was a word file. i had it saved to 
my desktop.

apple works is what opened it. i made a few changes. did i want to 
save? yes, as a word file still.

it showed me flash of a dialogue box. then appleworks unexpectedly quit.

so.

the document is no longer on the desktop.

nor can any file of that name [assemblage.doc] or anything like that 
name be found on the machine.

have no clue what to do and all my books are packed up because i am 
moving.

surely this document hasnt been vaporized?
