In this update on my problem, I'm quoting an off-list response I received. Since it was off-list, I'm leaving out the sender's identity. (Thanks, friend!)

After first reading this, I, probably mistakenly, pressed the middle slot space (in the row of slots next to the hinge) with my fingernail and immediately all the lights went off! (Was this a wild coincidence or is there something under that slot?)

Now, however, I have the same problem as before except with no lights on! The machine appears totally dead.

After this happened, I managed to find a user manual for the clamshell iBooks on the Apple web site at <http://manuals.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/ibook/0340969UM.PDF>. I also found info about resetting the Power Manager at <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449#faq4>. I now know where the Reset button is, at least! But I've tried various sequences of pressing the Reset button (with and without the battery installed) followed by pressing the power key or the Control-Cmd-Power-Key combo -- with the battery installed, of course.

It was the Num Lock indicator, according to someone on the <powerbooks at mail.maclaunch.com> list.

I don't seem to be having much of that yet!

P.S. A while ago, after I had the battery out for an hour and put it back in, those green lights went on again. Then I tried to start up and the lights immediately went out and stayed out.
