I do that (5 partitions, actually, 1 for 9, 1 for X with 9 Classic,
1 for VPC, 1 for swap, and 1 for etc ), as do many people.  At
least 2 partitions eases diagnosing problems on any one, boot to
the other and work from it.  For messing around, you could even
try two of the X-with-Classic partitions:  one for usual, one for
fooling around with course ideas, etc.
