In short, no. Microsoft hasn't released a player for the Mac that supports the version 9 codec. Only the windows software can play these files. The version 9 codec is the first step in their big DRM/content control nastiness, and it's unlikely we'll see this codec on the mac - why would they? If they get juicy exclusive media distribution deals they'll keep them PC only. For the sake of my soul, I don't touch Windows Media Player. I can do without any content that is in that format. It's not worth it. You could ask your uni to use something other than WMP - like Quicktime, or even (shudder) Realplayer - at least Real Networks, while being a very shady/unlikable company, has a player that works on both Mac and PC with their latest codec.
