If he's the only user, you may have to deal with the command line to get
this to work. If he has remote login turned on, ssh to the machine from
your clamshell. Otherwise, boot into single user mode.

I suggest creating a new user, using the niload command.
First, use pico to create a file:

	pico new_user_file

This starts pico with an empty document. TYpe in:

test:*:701:20::0:0:Test Account:/Users/test:/bin/tcsh

Make sure there is a return at the end. Type ctrl-x to finish up. You will
get a prompt asking if you want to save. Of course you do!
The next step will set up a new user with the "short name" test.

	cat new_user_file | sudo niload passwd .

The "sudo" part is not needed if you are in single-user mode. You will be
asked to type in your password before the command can complete.

Next, give the test user a password so you can log in with it.

	sudo passwd test

Again, sudo isn't needed in single user mode. If you waited more than 5
minutes between this command and the last, you will need to type yout
admin password again. Otherwise, just follow the directions.

Finally, you need a home directory.

	sudo mkdir /Users/test

Same sudo warnings as before.

Reboot the machine. There should be a "Test Account" login now.

If you can log in there, you know that it is just something in your normal
account causing problems. If you can't log in, then there is something
more serious.
