external DVD burner (firewire)

Hi all,

does anyone have any experience with using an external (firewire) 
DVD-R? Does one need to use special software (like Toast, etc), or can 
one burn from finder (as for the internal Combo)?

I've got Xcdroast installed, but am having problems with one of the 
required programs (setpriority).
